Din Tai Fung

I went to Din Tai Fung yesterday at Gardens. It was my forth time there :)
This restaurant never failed my expectation with their good quality food and services...

Here are some photos I took from Din Tai Fung- Singapore and Din Tai fung - KL.

Drunken Chicken - Rm 12.80
Best drunken chicken I had ever tasted.
The chicken skin was so springy and the meat was well blended with a hint of chinese wine.
Slurpp...

Shrimp and Pork Shaomai Rm 13.80
Be careful with this baby. When you bite on it, the juice will burst like crazy !
It's like a combination of Shaomai and Xiao Long Bao.
Very Special !

Vegetarian Jiao Zi Rm 10.80
I found this rather normal. The ones in Canton-I, Mid Valley tasted better.
You can skip this.

The ingredients were mushroom and some garlic chives.

Spicy Shrimp and Pork Wanton Rm 9.00
This was a MUST TRY ! It's not very spicy but the taste was very unique.
It tasted like szechuan sauce or chili oil sauce.
The combination of shrimp and pork here was genius.
It gave a very wonderful chewing sensation :)

Smoked Fish Rm 18.80
This one was Blah. You can forget about this too !

Pork Chop Fried Rice Rm 15.00
I liked this !! The rice were fluffy and fragrant.
And the pork chop was meaty !!! Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside.
Yums ! Must Try !

Hot and Sour La Mian Rm 12.50
This was the La Mian version. There's a soup version without the noodles too.
They both tasted the same.
Very Unique taste indeed.
The ingredients were black fungus slices, tofu slices, bamboo shoots slices and etc...
It's very very very appetizing ! My favourite !

Singapore - Pork Chop Fried Rice

Singapore - Xiao Long Bao
The reason I din't post this dish for KL is that, both looked the same :)
However, I must say that the Xiao Long Bao in Singapore tasted far better than the ones in KL.
I think, the dumpling skin was too thick and the meat was rather too little in KL ?
What do you think?
I miss the XLB in Soho, One Utama. But the restaurant had closed down. :(

Singapore - Drunken Chicken

Singapore - Pork Rolls
I couldn't find this in the KL's menu. This was fabulous.
The pork was rolled with a slice of fruit in it.
The saltiness of the meat and the sweetness of the fruit = YUMMY !

I would always wanna go back to this place. The service was very good.

The waiters was very attentive, friendly and helpful. Though, most of them speak Mandarin with a very thick accent which was kinda difficult to understand at first. It's also quite a down side for those who don't understand Mandarin :(

Find a translator friend if you don't understand complicated Mandarin ! hehehe...

Overall rating : 9/10
Verdict : will always go back again :)

Happy Hunting !

Kepong Bak Kut Teh

This old shop is located along the Kepong main road. It has a long history and it serves the best late night bak kut teh !!!

The name of the shop

A little stall

Braised Pork Leg - Lou Zhu Geok
The thick gravy was very tasteful as it was cooked with many spices.
The meat was tender and well marinated by the thick gravy.
Superb !

Intestine and Stomach Bak Kut Teh
The soup here was slightly different than the previous one.
This was bak kut teh soup with a hint of cinnamon and star anise.
Nice !

Braised Pig's Tail
Wow ! It's bad for the cholesterol but it's damn good for our taste buds.
You could literally feel the marinated fats swimming in your mouth..
LOL !

BKT Tau Pok
This was normal.
It acted as a balancing agent after eating so much of meat.

Star of the Night : Braised Pork Belly
It was juicy, tender and explosive !
Must TRY this !

BKT's Ribs
This was normal too.
It acted as a side dish.

I couldn't find the road name and address of this place. And it doesn't have a proper shop name too !

So, when you drive along the Kepong main road, you'll see a row of old shop lots after passing by Kepong's Jusco. Look out for this bak kut teh shop with no signboard and a big crowd.

There are a few shops that looked similar to this shop but they put up signboard and they have no crowd. Don't be conned by them.

This famous BKT shop is located at the last shop lots before the SHELL petrol station. It's on the left hand side of the road. It situated near an electronic shop and opposite a Fishing accesories shop named Seagral.

Good luck in finding !
It's open from 10pm till early in the morning :)

Overall rating : 8/10
Verdict : will definitely go back again :)

Jade Pot Steamboat Restaurant - Old Klang Road

I heard of many good reviews about this place. So, I went to try this with my girlfriends.
This restaurant is located along Jalan Kelang Lama aka Old Klang Road.
It serves steamboat as well as dim sum.

A pot of green tea - Rm 2 per pax
Looked very cute isn't it?

We ordered a set of 2. Rm 46.80.
We also ordered some side dishes like extra yam, chicken slices and vegetables to go along with our set.

Fish Head with Yam soup
It was served with 4 pieces of fried fish head and a handful of yam pieces.
The soup was flavourful, we couldn't help but to keep adding soup :)
The yam were soft and fluffy while the fish head were very fresh.
Good !

Appetizer : Fried Shrimp Dumpling
It was very nice !
It was wraped with a mouthful of shrimps inside.
Very fresh and delicious.

Set
Everything was handmade here.
There were meat balls, fish balls, shrimp balls and etc.
Special !

Set - Pork Slices
I liked the pork slices here. It was big and thick.
Yummy !

Set

Set

Sauces
There were green chili sour sauce, FU YU aka fermented tofu paste, red chili sour sauce and lastly fried chili sauce ( taste like XO sauce )

The end result
Lastly, after eating everything, we threw in the yee mee and beat two eggs into the soup.
A satisfying and delicious way to end our meal :)

Set - Lime Jelly
We loved this jelly so much that we wanted to order another round of this.
However, it was not for sale, it came with the set.
But, the staff was kind enough to treat us another round of this jelly.
So good !!

They have a set of 4 - Rm 89.80
and also a set of 6 - Rm 139.80

It's a very good place to eat high quality steamboat and to enjoy a very cool atmosphere.
Highly recommeded !

Restoran Hong La Qiao, Off Jalan Pudu

Hong La Qiao means Red Chili in mandarin. It's located behind Times Square, KL. And, it's true enough that this place serves all kinds of spicy dishes because it's a Szechuan style chinese cooking restaurant.

I was drawn to this place by the Steamboat Buffet Promotion which is only Rm 28.80 per pax. And, Buy 3 free 1 !!

Here are some things that I'd tried :

Szechuan Style Appetizer
Appetizers included in the buffet.
First, the pizza thingy tasted like the thick version of roti canai.
Secondly, braised chicken feet which was not bad.
Then, stir fried chicken gizzards and pig's ear - one of my favourite here.

All In One Pot !
This was the SUMMARY of the ingredients for the steamboat buffet - All in one pot ! Ha !
I chose the yin yang soup which was half Szechuan Spicy Soup ( Ma La ) and half chicken soup.
Both of the soup was very tasty.
I liked the Spicy Soup a lot because, it's very fragrant and the sliced meat tasted fabulous if it's cooked in the spicy soup.

They were other kinds of soup available too. Like, herbal soup, pork bone soup and etc.

Unlimited flow of pork slices and beef slices. Fabulous !

List of ingredients :
Seafood :
- prawns
- white promfret
- crabs
- different kinds of shellfish
- squids
- abalone slices (side order - additional charges)
- jellyfish
- seaweeds
- fish / fish slices

Meat :
- pork slices
- beef slices
- mutton slices ( side order - additional charges )
- chicken slices
- chicken thigh meat
- chicken gizzards
- pig's intestines
- fried pig skin
- duck feet
- luncheon meat

Miscellaneous :
- all kinds of meat balls, fish balls, mushrooms, and vegetables.
- all kinds of bean curds and tofu. eg. egg tofu, white tofu, tau pok, fu zuk, etc.
- all kinds of noodles. eg. yee mee, emperor noodle, tong fun, spinach noodle, instant noodle, etc.
- all kinds of sauce
- all kinds of drink, ice cream and fruits.

What I liked about this place was the unlimited flow of fresh meat slices to be cooked in the spicy soup. And, eating it in a comfortable air conditioned restaurant was a double plus ! Authentic Ma La soup which was very fragrant and not too spicy, triple plus !

They serve ala carte steamboat and ala carte szechuan dishes to go with rice too !

Overall rating : 7/10
Verdict : will go back again :)

Restoran Shun Shun - Taman Taynton View

Restoran Shun Shun is famous for their Fish Paste Noodle.
It was even featured in Ho Chiak 8tv some time ago !

I decided to promote this place today because I feel that it deserved more attention.

Here are some signature dishes :

Bittergourd Fish Paste Noodle Rm 4.50
It was served with 6 pcs of fish paste, some minced pork and bittergourd.
What I liked about this dish was the unique fish paste and tasty clear soup.
I usually order vermicelli (bihun) instead of flat rice noodle (kuey teow) because the soup will taste even sweeter this way.
And it's low in fat, good for people who are dieting.

Shun Shun's Fish Paste
The fish paste will be freshly made once you place your order.
This fish paste had a tender texture which means that it contained
more fish paste than flour.
Some places made their fish paste too hard till it loses the fish taste.
But, this fish paste was authentic and real good !!

Seaweed Fish Paste Noodle Rm 4.50
Instead of bittergourd, one can always opt for seaweed. It came with 6pcs of fish paste, some bean curds ( Fu Chuk ) and seaweed.
It tasted kinda "homey" (according to my friend).
It reminded him of his grandma cooking. I can see why.
The tasty clear soup and seaweed made this a very healthy and heart warming food.

Fried Roasted Pork with Mustard Green Rice Rm 5
The mustard green ( sawi ) here was very fresh and it's cleanly washed.
How would I know that?
It's because it doesn't taste bitter. It's crunchy and sweet.
And it matches the roasted pork very well.

This place also serves other food like Beef Brisket Noodle, Wan tan mee, Wat tan hor, Fried rice, Sweet and sour pork rice, Curry mee, Ginger duck noodle and etc. You should try !!!

Overall Rating : 8/10
Verdict : will go back frequently =)

This place is located at :

No 75 Jln Dato Haji Harun
Taman Taynton View
Cheras, Kuala Lumpur 56000

It's beside the infamous Restoran Jin Man Taman Taynton View which is known for it's fish ball noodle. I do not like the fish ball noodle at Jin Man because it's plainly normal and overpriced ! You should always opt for Restoran Shun Shun instead, you won't regret it !

Ciaoz.

Restoran Sekinchan Ikan Bakar

I went to this place on Mother's Day. 08.05.2011.

I must really compliment the marketing team behind this restaurant for their efforts in promoting this place. There were banners all over the place few months ago, but I conveniently dismissed this place from my thoughts. However, a TV advert caught my attention few days ago. Good job, team !

Well, Restoran Sekinchan Ikan Bakar is currently one of the popular dining place in kl nowadays. It's famous for it's ikan bakar - Grilled fish.

Here are some of good food :

Nasi Lemak Rm 2.50
This may looked simple but it tasted awesome, man !!!
Sambal ikan bilis was neither too spicy nor too blant and the rice was so
"santan fragrant".
Good food for Malaysian :)

Chicken Soup Rm 3.00
It tasted like Sup Bunjut - A typical malay soup with some spices.
It's quite worthy considering the amount of chicken and potatoes in it !
Well, it's because it was self service :)
However, it was not as tasty as Sup Ayam at BRJ. This soup was quite diluted for a person who is so used to mamak's sup ayam.

Ulam Rm 1.00
Some might love ulam and some might not like them at all.
However, it's pretty healthy to eat it and it's usually served at Malay's restaurant.
The ulam here was clean and fresh.
I liked the okra and egg plant the most because it's very compatible with the grilled fish gravy.

Sambals - FOC
Well, there were 3 kinds of individual sambals here.
However, I must tell you that it's tasted nothing compared to the grilled fish gravy that I'll mention further down.

Grilled Ikan Jenahak Rm 30.00
Main dish of the day !
The most important factor about seafood is the freshness of it !
This place didn't disappoint me, for this fish was very fresh.
It was served with this Heavenly Gravy... which was sour and not too spicy.
Very appetizing.
Good food !

Grilled Cockles Rm 10.00
For those who do not like bloody cockles. You can always come here.
These "babies" were grilled to perfection. It's fresh, it's well cooked and the same Heavenly Gravy matched the cockles like ooh la la.
yum...

Grilled Crab Rm 24.00
I would say that this crab was only 50% fresh. The meat had became too soft due to the lack of freshness.
Although the gravy had saved the crab, it would have been better if the meat was solid and in tact.
I would suggest that you do not order crab if you like really fresh seafood.

Grilled Stingray Rm 21.00
This was my another favourite dish.
The ikan pari was very fresh and needless to say, the meat was tender and juicy.
Indeed, good food !

All the grilled seafood will come with the same gravy on top of it. However, the special part was that, the gravy will taste slightly different on different seafood. For example, I found out that the crab's gravy was slightly sweeter while the cockles' gravy was slightly more salty. For the rest, you can always experiment it yourself :)

Iced Lemon Tea Rm 1.50
Lastly, the cooler of the day.
This iced lemon tea will help to chill your body after all the "bakar-bakar".
It tasted like the normal teh o ais limau from mamak stall, but this was cheaper by
20 cents.
Not bad !

The down side about this place was the houseflies. Although there were just one or two of them, it was quite irritating. Disturbing us while we were enjoying the food.

However the good thing about this place was that, it was free from service tax and government tax ! Yay to our pockets !

Overall rating : 8/10
Verdict : will go back again : )
